Big Reminder: Blog for Gore Day on Thursday! (w. preview)
Tue Sep 11, 2007 at 09:05:38 PM PDT
Thursday, September 13th is Blog for Gore Day. That's just two days away so I hope you've been thinking about the blog you're going to post about Al Gore on Thursday.
I think it's generally understood among us Gore believers that the day Al Gore jumps into the race, he will automatically have the MONEY and the MUSCLE needed to effectively run for office. But we need to lend a hand with the MESSAGE!
MONEY: I know I've been holding back on opening my wallet to a Presidential candidate until I know definitively whether Gore is in or out and, if he jumps in, he gets an automatic hundred bucks from yours truly.
MUSCLE: The organization, well, that's already taking shape. Gore groups are energizing all across the country. Al Gore has built himself a bank of support through his various organizations. MoveOn might deny it now but I be they'll have his back if he jumps in as well.
MESSAGE: This is where we come in. The goal is to extend the narrative that Al Gore is the superior Democratic candidate to reclaim the America we lost. Yeah, Al Gore is the champion of saving our planet. And sure he's written about several other matters in Assault on Reason. But the man is far more compelling than just this.

The idea is to overwhelm the blogosphere and news feeds of all shapes and sizes with well thought out articles on Al Gore. Not just "Al Gore is Awesome" stories. Here are some of the suggestions that I have posted previously:
Biography:
Al Gore’s youth
Al Gore’s Vietnam years
Al Gore’s House record
Al Gore’s Senate record
Al Gore as Vice President
Issues:
The Clinton-Gore economic record
Government Efficiency (remember this was Gore’s first charge in the Clinton admin)
On the Iraq War
On Bush’s War on Terror
On Health Care
On Education
On Labor issues
On Campaigns and Elections
On the Media
On Balance of Powers
On Social Issues
2008 Election:
Where is Al Gore’s 2000 team now?
Direct policy comparisons to the current frontrunners
Draft Gore organization updates
Established deadlines to enter primaries and caucuses
Those are just a couple suggestions and I've received some other great ideas including local primary and caucus nomination guidelines, the message to America and the world of nominating Al Gore, etc. The blogs don't have to be built around a lot of research; they just need to be thoughtful.
It seems to me that there are three consistent Gore narratives running through the tubes as of late: 'Al Gore is a hypocrite', 'Al Gore will be appearing in town x' and 'Al Gore was nominated for prize x'. We can drown out the negative narrative about Al Gore by solidifying the message that he is the one man who can save America! We can undo it with a little effort from each of us!
As we've all learned in the early years of netroots organization, buzz can turn into substance very quickly. A great example is the story that Al Gore would be endorsing another candidate. In a low-profile interview earlier in the week, Al Gore said that he would endorse another candidate (right after he said he hasn't ruled out a run). Not 5 days later, the Washington Post had a full analysis of Gore's endorsement potential.Take a look at Hannity's BS claims that Gore is a hypocrite for consuming so much fuel with a Lear jet.
Who knows what the real results of Blog for Gore Day will be. Will you also send your articles to your local newspapers? Will there follow up articles by other bloggers or by the mainstream press? We won't know until we get Al Gore's message out there!
So what is it folks?! Are you blogging for Gore on Thursday? Share the idea for your story with other kossacks in this diary so we avoid duplication.
Thanks again to all who have helped with ideas and suggestions. Give it up for Al Gore! Write an article for Blog for Gore Day on Thursday, September 13th!

[Update: Here's a preview of my blog for Thursday.]
When I started Gore Watch, I wasn't quite sure what I was trying to achieve. I was really just trying to organize some information.
Mostly, I think I was expecting to get a clear picture of what Al Gore's plans were. Maybe I could decipher his intentions from the dates. All I could come up with was: He'll announce after the Nobel Peace Prize. His schedule is (mostly) clear but maybe he doesn't announce events this far in advance.
While making a couple minor updates to GoreWatch tonight, I realized something. While there may not be one clear story coming out of the calendar, there ARE a short number of possibilities.
- Al Gore announces he is running for President during his tour of the western states in early October. Doing so early in his calendar such as in New Mexico or Colorado would make geographic sense. He would also have a number of pre-arranged events throughout which he could plan media events. The main risk here is, of course, the Nobel committee is extremely anti-politics. Gore would risk the Nobel Peace Prize by getting into the race before their announcement on Oct. 12. Gore could, perhaps, try to preempt that by acknowledging the risk in an interview but eh.
- Al Gore announces in the last two weeks of October. The days after the Nobel Peace Prize will afford Al Gore some form of attention even if he doesn't get it. Between Oct. 12 and the next Democratic debate, Al has about 10 days to shit or get off the pot (as someone commented so delicately tonight). The only event he has scheduled is Oct. 17 in Chicago with the Economic Club of Chicago. From all the googling I've done, I can't find out a damned thing about this event.
- There are, of course, scenarios in which Gore announces even later in the year. I agree that late entrances haven't hampered the efforts of successful candidates in the past to an extent. (I believe Clinton didn't get in until December 1991 but I could be wrong.) But the climate HAS changed considerably. The first primary deadlines are in early November. The earliest I have is Nov. 5. Primaries and caucuses are moving up the calendar day to day and, if there's action in December, Gore can't wait a day past Halloween.
